Assassins

In the Assassins series I start with an early, pre-assassination attempt photo. Perhaps a found school photo from the internet. I might caption the photo, silhouette it and then print it on a sheet of colored paper. I then photograph the reflections of this paper - in a distorted mirrored surface. Moving around the paper, I am provided with a continuing stream of varying images, each of which I see, and choose to capture or not, as they appear in the camera viewfinder. Can I find something in the early depiction of the individual that hints at future behavior? The resultant image can be rendered in a variety of media.

Information about Routh n.13

A found early (pre-assassination-attempt) photo of Ryan Wesley Routh was silhouetted, captioned “ROUTH’ in black, and then printed on paper. That image was then photographed by the artist utilizing a distorted reflective surface, to produce this final image. Routh  attempted to assassinate then-former U.S. president Donald Trump on September 15, 2024 at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. Routh pointed his weapon, a SKS semi-automatic rifle, through the fence line, approximately 400 yards away from Trump. A Secret Service agent noticed this and fired four rounds towards Routh, who fled without firing. Routh was found guilty on September 23, 2025, of five charges, including attempted assassination and firearm offenses.

Information about Routh n.13

A found early (pre-assassination-attempt) photo of John Warnock Hinckley Jr., who was reportedly 17 at the time of this image, which appears to be from a high school yearbook. That image was silhouetted on red, captioned “HINCKLEY," and then printed on paper. That image was then photographed by the artist utilizing a distorted reflective surface, to produce this final image. Hinckley was 25 when he attempted to assassinate U.S. president Ronald Reagan as he left the Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C., on March 30, 1981. Captured at the scene, Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity and remained under institutional psychiatric care for over three decades. One reported explanation for the attempt was that he was hoping to impress actress Jodie Foster, for whom he was fixated after seeing her in the film Taxi Driver.
